This study examines patterns of growth in height and weight among children (<60 months) of highland and coastal agricultural communities of Ecuador. Highland children are significantly shorter, but not significantly lighter than their coastal peers. Linear growth rates (cm/6 months) are comparable between the two samples. Growth rates for body weight (kg/6 m) are similar in highland and coastal boys, whereas highland girls display larger weight gains than their coastal counterparts. In both regions, linear growth is compromised to a much greater extent than growth in body weight, and growth faltering for both height and weight is most pronounced between birth and 24 months of age. The similarity in growth rates between the highland and coastal samples suggests that high altitude hypoxia plays a relatively small role in shaping growth during the first five years after birth. Rather, it appears that most of the disparity in height between the two samples can be attributed to differences established by 6 months of age. The pattern of growth retardation seen in both regions during the first 24 postnatal months is similar to that observed among impoverished populations throughout the world and is likely associated with the influence of nutritional and disease stressors. After 2 years of age, little or no “catch up” growth is seen in height, whereas improvements in weight gain are more pronounced, especially among highland girls. The nutritional environment for fish larvae is analysed for the Basque continental shelf (Bay of Biscay), during the main anchovy-spawning period (spring) over two years. The quantity and quality of Suspended Particulate Matter (seston) is analysed for total particles, microparticles (20-200 μm) and mesoparticles (200-1000 μm). Separately, the characterisation of the < 20 μm particles is made, by subtracting the values obtained for micro- and mesoparticles, from the values for total seston. During the study period, the interannual variability on the nutritional environment was higher than inter-month, or spatial, variability. Changes in total seston quantity and quality were found to be associated to river discharges and marine circulation; these represented mainly the changes in the < 20 μm particles, which had the lowest nutritional value. In contrast, micro- and macroparticles were constituted mostly by living particles; they were found to have a higher nutritional value. Changes in abundance and quality showed similar trends in micro- and mesoparticles, but differed in the < 20 μm particles. However, the nutritional quality of particles increased with temperature within the three fractions. Biochemical analyses revealed that the nutritional environment, for fish larvae, was rich over the Basque continental shelf during both of the years investigated. 相似文献

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are derived from cellular oxygen metabolism and from exogenous sources. An excess of ROS results in oxidative stress and may eventually cause cell death. ROS levels within cells and in extracellular body fluids are controlled by concerted action of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. The essential trace element selenium exerts its antioxidant function mainly in the form of selenocysteine residues as an integral constituent of ROS-detoxifying selenoenzymes such as glutathione peroxidases (GPx), thioredoxin reductases (TrxR) and possibly selenoprotein P (SeP). In particular, the dual role of selenoprotein P as selenium transporter and antioxidant enzyme is highlighted herein. A cytoprotective effect of selenium supplementation has been demonstrated for various cell types including neurons and astrocytes as well as endothelial cells. Maintenance of full GPx and TrxR activity by adequate dietary selenium supply has been proposed to be useful for the prevention of several cardiovascular and neurological disorders. On the other hand, selenium supplementation at supranutritional levels has been utilised for cancer prevention: antioxidant selenoenzymes as well as prooxidant effects of selenocompounds on tumor cells are thought to be involved in the anti-carcinogenic action of selenium. 相似文献

The influence of macronutrients and growth regulators on in vitro shoot proliferation and rooting of an East Spanish population
ofMyrtus communis L. were studied. Preincubation of field material on a medium without mineral salts prevented the browning from phenolic exudates.
For multiplication, nodal segments of 5 mm fromin vitro produced shoots were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS), Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) and Heller (H) media (full strength
or diluted to 1/2 or 1/4), with 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) at concentrations 4.4, 13.3 and 22.2 ΜM or kinetin (K) at concentrations
4.7, 14.0 and 23.2 ΜM. The optimum shoot proliferation was on quarter-strength MS medium with 4.4 ΜM BAP, whereas the maximum
number of nodal segments was produced on half-strength MS medium with 4.4 ΜM BAP. Rooting of shoots was obtained by adding
2.5 – 24.6 ΜM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and broad range of macronutrients; Lloyd and McCown (WPM) and Gresshoff and Doy
(GD) media both full strength or diluted to 1/2 were optimum. No rooting was obtained in the presence of α-naphthaleneacetic
acid (NAA).

The effects of fragmentation and disturbance of rainforest on ground-dwelling small mammals on the Robertson Plateau, New South Wales, Australia 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We surveyed ground-dwelling small mammals in twenty-four rainforest remnants which were virtual islands surrounded by farmland on a plateau on the east coast of Australia. We investigated the effect of island size, level of disturbance, isolation and microhabitat on the abundance and species richness of the mammals. The remnants ranged from 0.3 to 29 ha, resulting from fragmentation during 175 years of European occupation. Two rodent species (Rattus fuscipes[Waterhouse, 1839] and R. rattus[Linnaeus, 1758] ) and one marsupial insectivore (Antechinus stuartii Macleay, 1841) were trapped in these remnants, with an additional species (A. swainsonii[Waterhouse, 1840] ) several kilometres away in rainforest on the escarpment of the plateau. Small-mammal species richness was low, but the native species (R. fuscipes and A. stuartii) were abundant. Three-way analyses of variance demonstrated that species richness and abundance decreased significantly with decreasing remnant size and increasing disturbance, but showed no distance effect. The abundance and richness of native species responded even more significantly. The interaction between the first two effects is important. Small remnants are affected most detrimentally by increasing disturbance, large remnants are less affected, and medium sized remnants show intermediate effects. The introduced R. rattus which was least abundant in large remnants, but more abundant in distant than near remnants, was also more abundant in those with major disturbance. The single most important variable in step-wise, multiple linear regression analyses was the logarithm of remnant area not influenced by edge effects, explaining 39% of the variance in species richness, 57% for native species richness and 46% for A. stuartii abundance. Disturbance related variables additionally contributed from 12 to 30% of the variance in dependent variables, while habitat variables explained between 22 and 48% of the variance, and accounted for two thirds of the explainable variance in R. fuscipes abundance. The implications of our results for wildlife conservation on the plateau are discussed. 相似文献

Data on nutritional intake and patterns of physical growth in the rural Andean community of Nuñoa, Peru (elevation 4,000 m), are described and compared to data previously collected from this location. Food consumption data and selected anthropometric measures were obtained from a sample of 33 households. Estimates of caloric intake from this study are very similar to those obtained in Nuñoa during the mid- and late 1960s. However, within the present sample, upper income (i.e., middle class) individuals have significantly higher caloric intakes than those of the lower income group and also appear to have an improved diet relative to individuals of 20 years ago. Anthropometric data show that children of the upper socioeconomic status (SES) group are significantly taller and heavier than the lower SES group children. Moreover, the children of the wealthier families are taller and heavier than the children measured 20 years ago at the same location, whereas the poorer children are not. These results indicate that nutritional factors have significantly contributed to the extreme pattern of slow growth previously reported for children of Nuñoa and, moreover, demonstrate how social and environmental forces interact to create differential levels of stress that contribute to variation in biological well-being. 相似文献

Summary To test the prediction that P. rapae egg densities increase with N fertilizer in large-scale systems as they do in model systems with potted plants, we used field experiments with Brassica oleracea var. acephala L. (collards and kale) planted in pots or large field plots, and treated with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer. In small-scale field experiments with potted kale and collards, egg densities were significantly higher on plants with high N than those with low N. But in larger scale experiments with field-grown collards, average seasonal P. rapae egg densities were not significantly correlated with leaf N content. These differences among experiments did not depend on the magnitude of the difference in foliage N levels. 相似文献
